The bridge gets its name from spanning the Golden Gate, the entrance to San Francisco bay.

The Golden Gate was a name given to the span of water by the American explorer of the region: John Fremont. Fremont's name was an inspired choice as he did not know that gold was shortly to be found in the foothills of California.
